Looking for Alaska : A Book Review / by Marc Hampson

Looking for AlaskaLooking for Alaska by John Green
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I have only physically been brought to tears while reading one book before reading Looking for Alaska and that was reading Bill Falangan's "A&R" back in 2000 at the end of a particular chapter that left me quietly devastated in all the best ways a story can.

John Green's story had me in tears four times; Twice happy, once very sad and the last very overwhelmed from a combination of both.

Don't get me wrong - I'm moved by great stories all the time and have no trouble getting emotionally involved with well written characters and adventures that take me to far off places, inside a character or even myself. BUT... while I may well up inside I just don't physically cry tears from reading the way I do with other media such as movies, television and music, so reading this book was quite an experience for me.

I don't read a lot of Young Adult fiction, but have become a big fan of John Green (and his brother Hank Green) as internet personalities and thought leaders on YouTube as the VlogBrothers and finally thought I'd give one of his books a try. I'm glad I did.

Great characters. Great story.

It didn't exactly blow my mind or change my life, but in the words of my friend Ronnie who helped me find the words to describe how I loved this book:

It blew my heart away:)
